As an upgraded variation on the classic picnic table, we make our Heritage line of tables. The Heritage tables have the same dimensions and strength as our Forever picnic tables, but the tabletops are built using extra-wide boards which further display the high quality redwood. This is a specialty table that we offer. The Heritage Tables are built with three twelve-inch wide boards as the tabletop and one twelve-inch wide board as each bench top. Our Heritage line is available in Six, Eight, Ten, Twelve and Fourteen-Foot lengths with benches attached or separate. Unfortunately, we cannot offer these tables in the Mature or Young Redwood.

These very special benches use only one twelve-inch wide board for the seat. They can be used in your garden on your deck or even in the spa.

Matching The Benches With Your Large Picnic Table: When purchasing a large Forever table, you can choose to have the benches attached or separate. If you choose to have separate benches, you may prefer to have four smaller separate benches instead of two benches the length of the table. The largest separate benches that we make are eight feet long. Still, you may find it more convenient to order an Eight-Foot Table with four separate four-foot benches instead of two eight-foot benches (same price). The Ten-Foot Table normally comes with four five-foot benches and the Twelve-Foot Table with four six-foot benches. The price of the table and bench sets does not change as long as the total combination does not exceed four benches for the tables eight-feet and larger.

A word about our larger tables: Picnic Tables that are twelve feet and longer have three sets of legs to prevent any possibility of sagging. All tables which are eight to 12 feet long have 36-inch wide tabletops. Our Fourteen-Foot picnic table is built with an extra wide 48-inch wide tabletop.

The Heritage tabletop boards are twelve inches wide. These tables are beautiful and the wood is very expensive to come by. But, there are some heat-related limitations with these tables because of the width of the tabletop boards. When the sun hits them, the tops get warmer than the bottom of the board. Because the boards are twelve inches wide each, when it is hot and dry they expand considerably and sometimes the grain has nowhere to go and opens from the ends of the table. Most of our customers do not mind this and consider it part of the “character” of the tabletop.

If your table is destined to be in a sun exposed area outdoors on a year-round basis and you do not want significant checks/cracks to develop, it is best to consider a tabletop made from standard six-inch wide boards. Sun-related cracks increase geometrically as the boards get wider – they will usually develop in the first or second season’s warm spells. As the table gets acclimated, the checking and cracking will stop. To limit cracking on the extra wide board Heritage tables, it is best to shield them from much direct sun.

The cracks on the ends of the Heritage tables usually do not extend more than a few inches. But, sometimes they form a sharp edge. This can be remedied by lightly sanding the sharp edge with a piece of 80 grit sandpaper. Redwood is easy to sand and this can be done in less than a minute by hand. If a crack is distracting and you’d like to fill it. Use a polyurethane based glue (like Gorilla brand glue). Just fill the crack with it and let it dry. Then lightly sand the area. The polyurethane glue expands with the wood. Any cracks will not affect the structural integrity of a table. Your table will last for decades with or without some cracks! If you do some sanding, you can match the finish by cleaning the surrounding area and applying a few drops of linseed oil and rubbing it in.
